Christmas Tree Care

All of our Christmas trees are hand picked, selected and cut freshly every day to order from our 2000 acre Christmas tree farm on the rural Shropshire borders. We believe the key to a quality Christmas tree is to have it cut freshly as close to your chosen delivery date as possible, so you are getting the freshest tree possible!

Some retailers who do not supply as freshly cut trees as ourselves claim that cutting a tree freshly and then distributing it straight away puts the tree in to shock. There is no  hard evidence to support this. We have been growing and distributing trees from the farm for over 40 years and have always cut fresh.

Christmas trees should be treated like freshly cut flowers and saying that us supplying you a freshly cut tree can cause needles loss is completely wrong. We supply thousands and thousands of trees to customers every year and have never had a complaint arising from distributing a tree too early. Buying a tree that has been cut for several days and not been put in water is like buying freshly cut flowers that are starting to wilt!

Planning Ahead For Your Delivery

We advise our customers to purchase their tree as near to the time when you want to start your display as possible.  All of our trees are harvested on their dispatch day , which helps the tree to keep maximum needle retention during the festive period.

It should be remembered that one of the worst enemies of any real Christmas tree is central heating. If you can locate the tree away from any radiator or alternatively afford to turn it off, then this will help to prevent the tree from losing moisture from its needles and should make the tree last longer. Plan ahead where your tree would be most suited, if you have young children this may also be an issue to consider.

Summary

  • Decide on a good placement for the tree. The tree must never be placed near a heat source.
  • Make a new cut on the bottom of the tree (remove 1/2 inch to 1 inch).
  • Cover the floor under the tree with a big plastic sheet and put a decorative piece of fabric on top of it. The plastic will protect the floor from the water that gets spilled while refilling the tree stand.
  • Place the tree in a tree stand that is large enough to hold at least one gallon of water.
  • Maintain the tree throughout the season by checking the water level twice a day in the beginning. After about two weeks, the tree will drink less water as it starts slowly to dry out. Also spray water mist onto the branches, be careful though, not all ornaments like that.

On Delivery Of Your Christmas Tree
After your tree is delivered it should be kept outside in a cool place (with the net on so you can get it back into the house!), preferably standing in water until it is required indoors.   Before bringing the tree indoors it is an advantage if about half an inch is cut of the stump in order to open the pores of the tree. If possible mount it in a water holding stand or wedge it in a bucket with pebbles, small stones or screwed up newspaper and place it away from direct heat. Keep the container topped up with water every day;   you will be surprised how much water Christmas trees need!

Positioning
Choosing a good position for your tree is very important.  Most importantly making sure that the tree is away from sources of heat, this will help it retain its needles and look fresh.  Keeping the tree near a window is also a good idea, and if it is safe to do so, keeping the window a jar at night may also help.

Watering
You should treat a Christmas Tree as your would treat fresh flowers in the home.  Water is essential to keeping the tree healthy looking over the Christmas period, even non shed trees will require some watering.  A Christmas Tree can drink up to a pint of water a day, one of our Christmas Tree Stands is the ideal and recommended way of keeping the tree watered with the minimum amount of mess!  If you have a small spray gun, spraying water over the branches is also a good idea.
