Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about choosing, ordering and caring for your real Christmas tree.

Start by measuring the height of your room or display area, then allow extra space for the tree stand and any topper. Smaller trees are usually better for compact rooms, while taller trees work well in rooms with high ceilings, entrances, offices and commercial spaces.

Remember to account for the spread of the tree too. As a rough guide, the tree will likely have a width / diameter of between half and two-thirds of its height.
In terms of height, you won’t want the tree scraping on the ceiling. To account for a tree stand and topper (such as an angel or star), you’ll likely need between a foot to a foot and a half of space from the top of the tree to the ceiling. This ensures things don’t look cramped.

Ideally, you also want to position the tree a foot away from any walls and far from sources of heat — to ensure the tree stays fresh as long as possible.
The rooms in a house are designed to have enough space for a person to stand up comfortably. This means that domestic Christmas trees are often about the same height as a person — or a little taller.

6 and 7 foot trees are the most common choice for UK homes.

This can vary, of course, according to how large your rooms are. A Georgian townhouse with lofty ceilings will be able to accommodate a larger tree than a cosy cottage, for example.
Businesses, venues and commercial spaces often need larger trees to create the right impact. Entrances, reception areas, hotels, shopping centres and outdoor displays may need taller trees than a typical home setting, especially where the display needs to be seen from a distance.

In an office setting, a smaller tree may make more sense. Ensure the tree doesn’t obstruct movement and that cables won’t be a trip hazard.
A large tree makes sense when it needs to make an impact. Very large trees are ideal for town squares, retail parks and other outdoor public spaces. They can also be a great addition to tall atriums and entranceways in venues, indoor shopping centres, historic buildings and hotels.

Choose a larger tree if it fits your budget, you have a plan to erect and decorate it, and you’ve done a risk assessment.
